Lubbock equipment appraisal is a certified, written value for heavy equipment on the South Plains, the cotton country around Lubbock: cotton strippers and tractors, the machinery inside a gin, trucks and trailers, construction machines and oilfield equipment. The signer is a CMEA, a Certified Machinery and Equipment Appraiser. Growers, gin managers, contractors and their bankers turn to a Lubbock equipment appraiser when equipment is financed, sold, insured or divided.

What should a South Plains owner know before ordering?

Three offices at one address
The federal district court for the Lubbock Division and the bankruptcy court’s Lubbock office are both in the George H. Mahon Federal Building at 1205 Texas Avenue. The West Texas District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) lists the same street address, in Room 408.
Each county has its own appraisal district
Lubbock County’s is the Lubbock Central Appraisal District on Avenue Q. Its own page says a rendition, the yearly list of business equipment, is due on or before April 15, that a written request extends the date to May 15, and that an account with no rendition is subject to a 10 percent penalty. The page does not say whether a grower’s farm machinery has to be listed, so ask the district before you file. Hockley, Lynn, Crosby, Garza and Cochran counties each have a district of their own. This is stripper country
A guide titled “Stripper Harvesting,” written by authors from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas A&M and Cotton Incorporated, calls the brush-roll cotton stripper the main harvester on the High Plains of Texas. Many growers in other regions run spindle pickers, which pluck the cotton from open bolls and leave the burrs on the plant. Say which one you have.
Two kinds of value
Fair market value means the price in a normal sale, with no pressure on buyer or seller. Orderly liquidation value is usually a lower figure, for a sale that must close within a set number of months. A lender may ask for either one or both.
Turnaround
Desktop reports generally take 7 to 10 business days, starting when your photos and records arrive. With only one or two machines, a rush of 24 to 48 hours can be quoted. Reports with an inspection take longer.
Fee
Starting at $295. More machines, an inspection or a rush will raise it.

How do I choose an appraiser for South Plains equipment?

Do they know a stripper from a picker?

The two machines harvest cotton in different ways and sell to different growers. Ask the appraiser which one is common around Lubbock and why it matters to the price.

Will they say how gin machinery was valued?

A gin stand is worth one figure running in its building and another on a truck. Ask that the report state which case it assumes.

Can the report be ready without stopping the harvest?

A stripper is needed in the field at harvest, and a visit can cost a day of it. Ask whether photos and records will do, and get the delivery date in writing.

What do I send for a farm or gin appraisal?

  • A list of the equipment with year, make and model.
  • Serial numbers, and VINs for trucks and trailers.
  • Engine hours, and any other hour readings on harvest machines.
  • Photos showing each machine, the serial plate and the meter.
  • For gin machinery, a note on whether it stays in the building.
